Philly Ad Club organized and hosted its “5 For Your Future” event on Wednesday, Oct. 2 at Temple University.

During the event, industry professionals spoke to college students about five key skills needed for a successful career. Professionals included Lead Designer Chris Loringer, O3 World; Account Management and Marketing Executive Paige Albers, Digitas Health; Global Business Development Manager Julie Paretchan, SEER Interactive; President Marci Hackel, First Place Career Solutions; and Social Media Director Kristen Kane, Kane Partners.

I listened closely and wrote copious notes as the professionals each offered five tips for success, based on their personal experiences.

And — the results are in — here are 26-proven tips to help you boost your personal brand and blaze your career trail:

A creative’s advice on setting yourself apart from the competition:

  1. Just being good at your job isn’t enough anymore.
  2. Make yourself useful (and start right away).
  3. Put yourself in uncomfortable situations.
  4. Prepare for big moments.
  5. Create a work/life balance
  6. Bonus tip: Enjoy it (your job and your life)!

An account manager’s advice on relationship building

  1. Be a strategic thinker.
  2. Be collaborative.
  3. Be proactive.
  4. Be a time-management wizard.
  5. Be willing.

A business development manager’s advice on company culture and your brand:

  1. Research and understand company culture
  2. Build trust.
  3. Position yourself as a thought leader.
  4. Distinguish your personal and professional brand.
  5. Show passion and enthusiasm.

A president’s advice on realizing opportunities and potential: 

  1. Get involved.
  2. Lead.
  3. Network.
  4. Gain experience.
  5. Add value.

A social strategist’s advice on using LinkedIn to your advantage and showcasing your skills:

  1. Practice SEO (Search Engine Optimization).
  2. Customize your profile.
  3. Avoid common mistakes and pitfalls.
  4. Join groups.
  5. Search and expand your network.
